Sleeve notes

Nova Sinclair, written in the room where the record was made.

for about six years I wrote very well about people leaving.

I want to be honest that this was a skill. absence has shape. you can describe the edge of a thing that is gone and everyone recognises the outline. presence has no edge. it is just there, all the way through the day, and the first time I tried to write it down I produced four verses of nothing.

clear was one voice in one room and no production to hide behind. I meant it. I also thought it was the end of something rather than the start. what actually happened is that I said what I wanted, out loud, in a way that could not be taken back — and it was answered. that is where this record begins. not with the wanting. with the answer, and with me standing there afterwards holding it, waiting for the catch.

so I put the machines back on.

not to hide. I needed the weight. I could not write happiness as an acoustic guitar and a nice afternoon, because that is not what it feels like in the body — it feels like voltage that finally has somewhere to go. the low end on this record is not decoration. it is the argument.

these ten songs took about fourteen months and most of them were written in the same forty square feet, with the gear left on overnight because I could not be bothered to reach behind the desk, and the light coming across it in the morning like it had been waiting. two cups in different places. a phone that did not ring with anything urgent. a door that was only a door. it took me an embarrassingly long time to stop checking that door.

I am not healed and this is not a record about being rescued. nobody completed me. what happened is smaller and harder: I stayed myself, in a room I still recognise as mine, next to someone who kept choosing to be in it. good at staying is the closest thing here to a thesis, and staying turns out to be a practice, not a personality. you get better at it or you don't.

I have kept the partner mostly out of these songs on purpose. they are a presence, not a subject. what I could write about was my own nervous system slowly learning to unclench, which is the least cinematic thing that has ever happened to me and the one I am proudest of surviving.

it ends on a morning. not a promise — a morning. I woke up inside it and then I went back to work.

play it loud. it was made loud.
