Two In The Morning

Two In The Morning is one artist, one apartment, and a filing system.

It was set up in 2019 for an unglamorous reason: a record needs somebody's name on the back of it, and Nova Sinclair did not want that name to belong to anyone else. For the first two years it released nothing at all. It existed the way a bank account exists — quietly, in advance of a purpose, so that when the purpose arrived there would be no negotiation about who owned it.

The name comes from a line people kept using about the songs, that they play back the way a memory does at two in the morning. She got tired of being handed the phrase and took it instead.

There is no office and no staff. Mastering, manufacture, and distribution are contracted per release and hold nothing. Everything else — the writing, the production, the mixes, the sequencing, the photographs, the type on the sleeve — happens in the room where the records are made, and the imprint mark stays on the rear cover where it belongs.

It has never signed anybody. It has been asked twice and said no twice, and that is not a shortage of ambition; it is the whole design. A second artist means a second opinion about a master, and the point of the arrangement is that there is no other side of the table. The trade is scale, and the cost of that is known and has been paid every year since 2019.
