About

Arc Light Domestic was a letterhead, a borrowed desk above a Holborn travel agency that mostly booked package holidays to Benidorm, and a chequebook that could fund a disaster but not an empire.

Helena Ashcombe registered the name in March 1984, over warm white wine. She liked industrial words made small: arc light for cinema and welding, domestic for the kitchen, the small room, the English refusal to admit ambition. The letterhead was printed on dove-grey stock before there was anything to put on it.

Marcus Devereux brought her the acts and translated between the class codes. Celia Rook, never an employee, made the records sound like the money was real. A lawyer known in the surviving correspondence only as P. drafted option contracts vague enough to keep reissue attorneys entertained forty years later.

What Arc Light meant, when it meant anything, was early digital and analogue side by side, dance-floor tempo with drawing-room diction, provincial ambition performed as continental ease, and sleeves designed before the music was finished. Dove grey, cream, mirror button, sodium streetlight. People who refuse to smile on command.

Between 1984 and 1986 it financed sessions for Glass Census, ran out of budget mid-mix on Linen Parade, signed Second Breakfast Club on a napkin, and failed to name Sable Quince anything they would answer to. It pressed almost nothing. In August 1985 the Blue Meridian tape room flooded; by September the insurance dispute had frozen the money, and by February 1986 a final board meeting was three people and a cold pot of coffee, for a board that had never existed.

Helena's papers surfaced in 2025 — the Filofax, the sleeve transparencies, Rook's session sheets, a three-line letter written after the flood with a smudge where the fourth line would have been. The discography remains nearly empty. The paper trail is nearly complete.
