Biography
NULLA is Nives Kravos, 31, from Trieste, and she makes the quietest pop music in Europe. Her songs sit between 30 and 48 dB โ conversation at best, breath at worst โ and are mixed for headphones through a binaural dummy head.
She grew up in Servola, on the industrial edge of the city, in an apartment that shook when the ferries reversed. Her father calibrated marine radios on night shift at the port. Her mother recorded the Slovene-language announcements for the ferry terminal: boarding calls, delay notices, the safety loop. For most of her childhood the loudest and most public voice in Trieste belonged to her mother, and it was not her mother โ it was a recording, disembodied, amplified to fill a concrete hall, saying nothing personal to anyone.
She has said this is the only piece of biography that actually explains her.
At seventeen she became the screamer in GRAVEWATER, a five-piece from the Karst, and toured the mid-tier European club circuit on cortisone, ibuprofen, and the common, incorrect belief that a voice is a muscle that gets stronger the more you tear it. On 4 October 2022, on the fourth night of a twenty-two-date run, she finished a set in Ljubljana and could not speak. Bilateral vocal fold hemorrhage. Surgery in Vienna eleven days later, six weeks of absolute voice rest, two years of therapy, and a stiff segment of scar tissue on the left fold that is not going anywhere.
She can sing, softly, in a narrow range. She cannot produce distortion. Her surgeon gave her a ceiling and one very short sentence about what happens if she goes through it.
She spent the six silent weeks writing on paper and listening to the room.
Breath Only followed in 2024, recorded into a secondhand dummy head in her parents' front room with the window open onto the port. Then "Mouth Sounds for the Bereaved" in 2025, which was funny and then, on the fourth listen, was not.
She did not choose quiet as a concept. Quiet chose her, in a hospital in Vienna, and the concept arrived afterwards, like a phone call from her manager.
